Tenor, SCOTT JOINER, is rapidly gaining recognition for his unique combination of dynamic vocal artistry and versatile acting abilities. Since his introduction to opera as a youth he has performed with Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Knoxville Opera, the Opera Company of Brooklyn, Asheville Lyric Opera, American Opera Projects, Intermezzo Opera Festival, Teatro Magnani di Fidenza, and has been heard with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, Asheville Symphony, the Escher String Quartet, and in concert at the Salone Barezzi in Busseto. He was recently invited to perform in the 2nd annual Lotte Lehmann Vocal Recital at the 2011 Wintergreen Music Festival, presented in cooperation with the Lotte Lehmann Foundation of New York City.
First Place winner in the 2011 Heafner Williams Vocal Competition, last season he also made his Knoxville Opera debut, was featured in concert at the Historic Tennessee Theatre and with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra as the soloist in Finzi's For St. Cecilia broadcast live on WCQS. Upcoming roles include Ferrando in Così fan tutte with Asheville Lyric Opera.
He has been a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was invited by Tony and Emmy Award-winning director George Faison to perform at the Inaugural Gala of NYC's Faison Firehouse Theater. At the Intermezzo Opera Festival, Mr. Joiner sang the leading tenor roles in Massenet's Cendrillon and Britten's Albert Herring under the batons of the Metropolitan Opera's J. David Jackson and Steven Crawford. Other roles performed include Nemorino in L'Elisir d'Amore, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicci, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, the title role in Handel's Xerse, Basilio and Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro and Wilson Ford in Stephen Paulus' The Village Singer. He sang Pedrillo in Die Entfhürung aus dem Serail at Teatro Magnani di Fidenza in 2007. His teachers have included acclaimed tenors Neil Rosenshein, Vinson Cole and Leonardo de Lisi.
Joiner was a member of the Opera Studio at Manhattan School of Music, where he also appeared with the American Musical Theater Ensemble and TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble. In 2006 he sang the leading tenor role for the U.S. premier of the opera Selenal at The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University and was invited by American soprano, Catherine Malfitano, to be one of seven participants in The Malfitano Project, a four-part seminar on interpretation, acting, and body movement, culminating in a public Master Class in NYC. He studied voice at Interlochen Arts Academy from 1998 to 2001.
A frequent recitalist, he has studied art song interpretation with Grammy-nominated pianist Warren Jones and given numerous premiers collaborating with composers such as Richard Danielpour, Steven Schwartz, John Bucchino, Giampaolo Bracali, Larry Alan Smith, Wang Jie and Marcus Paus. He studied acting at New York's Michael Howard Studios with Theatre Company of Boston founding member, Naomi Thornton.
Beginning his musical training at an early age, Joiner sang boy-soprano roles in Tosca and Albert Herring with Opera Colorado under legendary Met director Nathaniel Merrill and international conductor Janos Acs. He also sang the role of Erste Knabe in Central City Opera's 1995 production of Mozart's Die Zauberflote under the baton of John Moriarty. Guided by Grammy Award-winning conductor Duain Wolfe (Chicago Symphony Chorus director), he toured internationally as a member of the Colorado Children's Chorale, appearing on a CBS televised Christmas special with Kathie Lee Gifford and performing for former President Gerald Ford and Pope John-Paul II.
